Substantive Law Public Entity
Public entity law covers many different types of cases including police
excessive force and wrongful arrest cases, civil rights, discrimination, sexual
harassment, employment cases, government tort liability, prison cases, school
district cases, dangerous conditions of public property, design defects, etc.
The public entity law practitioner must be intimately familiar with tort claims
procedures and the immunities available to public entities. Many ADC members are
involved in public entity law representing municipalities, counties, school
districts, The State of California, water districts, sanitation districts, etc.
This includes working with professional risk managers and management groups,
self insurance pools, County counsel, City counsel, and school district counsel
as well as City councils, County Boards of Supervisors, and School Boards.
Public entity law presents unique challenges to attorneys who practice in this
area of law.
The Public Entity Law Committee is dedicated to keeping ADC members apprised of
developments and issues regarding public entity law in all of the areas set
forth above through sharing of ideas and resources, regular case law updates,
forum postings, and seminars. In addition, the Committee will endeavor to
incorporate its clients in its activities, affording valuable networking
opportunities. The Committee will monitor legislation that may affect this
practice area, offer assistance with amicus briefs, and provide e-mail updates.
The Committee will produce articles for The ADC Comment as well as provide
education and information to ADC members through seminars and brown bag lunches.
The Public Entity Law Committee encourages you to become involved by sharing
your successes on motions and in trial, your creative arguments, and unusual or
interesting issues you have had to address in your practice. If you would like
to share any ideas or comments, have any questions, or would like to get
involved in this committee, please contact:
